千駄ヶ谷で80年の歴史を持つ松田建設工業は、地域に開かれた社員食堂「DAGAYA」、寄合所のようなアイス店「filcream」に続く地域貢献プロジェクトとして、1100年以上の歴史を持つ鳩森八幡神社の目の前に「filcircle」をスタートさせた。 filcreamからわずか120歩。オーナーが北欧・ヨーロッパで集めた職人の手仕事による一点ものを並べるセレクトショップでありながら、地元作家のワークショップや料理教室も定期開催。地域の歴史・文化・人をつなぐ、新たな「交流拠点」をつくる取り組みである。 filcircleは、道から見上げると1.5階ほどの絶妙な高さに位置する。通りを行く人が思わず見上げたくなるよう、店全体を包み込むシャンデリアのような天井をデザインした。発想の原点は、隣に佇む鳩森八幡神社拝殿の格天井。江戸期に狩野探幽や円山応挙が描いた天井画は、400年の時を超えて地域に受け継がれてきた。この格天井に「地域の縁」を表す店名の円を重ね、円の部分には職人が一枚一枚銅板を貼り込んだ。道路より高い位置ならではの視点で、銅板には街の風景が柔らかく映り込む。ゆらゆらと揺れる街の情景――それは、この時代、この千駄ヶ谷ならではの「天井画」となる。

Matsuda Construction Industry, a company with 80 years of history in Sendagaya, launched "filcircle" directly across from Hatonomori Hachiman Shrine—a shrine with over 1,100 years of history—as the latest in a series of community projects, following "DAGAYA," a company cafeteria open to the neighborhood, and "filcream," an ice cream shop designed as a local gathering place. Just 120 steps from filcream, filcircle is a select shop offering one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces collected by the owner on travels through Scandinavia and Europe. Yet it is more than a retail space: it regularly hosts workshops by local artisans and cooking classes. The project aims to create a new community hub that connects the history, culture, and people of the neighborhood. filcircle sits at a curious height—about a story and a half above the street. To draw the eyes of passersby upward, the ceiling was designed like a chandelier enveloping the entire shop. The inspiration came from the coffered ceiling of the neighboring shrine's worship hall, where paintings by Edo-period masters Kano Tanyu and Maruyama Okyo have been passed down through the community for 400 years. Overlaying this coffered grid with the circle of the shop's name—a symbol of community ties—artisans hand-applied copper sheets to each circular panel. From this elevated vantage point, the copper softly reflects the streetscape below. The gently shimmering scenes of the town become a ceiling painting unique to this era, and to this place: Sendagaya.
